our little o negative baby
I’ve known that I had O negative blood type for a long time, but it was only recently that I learned it was relatively uncommon. My parents are both O positive, and of the four of us kids, two are O negative.
Blood type is important when one becomes pregnant, especially if the mother is negative. Apparently if a negative mother has a positive fetus, and the fetus’ positive blood gets into the mother’s bloodstream, the mother will produce antibodies which can travel through the placenta and destroy the fetal red blood cells. This can be bad - so there is a routine medication given to negative mothers with positive fathers called Rhogam.
However, the Mr. is negative. O negative, in fact. He had a blood test to prove to the doctor that he was negative and I wouldn’t need Rhogam, and when it came back she said “It seems you picked a perfect husband!” Apparently, also, an O mother and an A or B child could cause more jaundice in a baby as well. I should note, however, that some doctors ALWAYS give Rhogam to negative mothers, just in case the father isn’t the husband … They trusted me though, I guess, and didn’t give me Rhogam.
So when we were post-delivery, and the baby was being tested and evaluated, I asked if they knew the blood type yet. I had been making jokes throughout the pregnancy that we would be having an O negative baby, there is nothing else it could be, and if that baby didn’t come out being O negative I’d be in big trouble. Thank God he was O negative, now the Mr. knows for sure I was faithful. (As if he had doubts.)
So I’m a relatively firm believer in the blood type diet which I note has no scientific backing, where O people tend to like meat and A people tend to not like meat so much. It doesn’t always hold true, but it holds true with the Mr. and me - we like meat. I’m thinking our little baby is going to like meat as well.
