blamers and the nuclear family
I hate to link to other blog posts here, because people can search for posts that link to their own posts. So I’m going to try to write about this blog without actually linking to it. The blog is called (symbols and spaces inserted to make it non-searchable) I * B L A M E * T H E * P A T R I A R C H Y. Go ahead and look for it.
I don’t know how I stumbled across this blog, but I added it to my blogroll and find it interesting to read her opinions. I’m not much of a feminist I guess, and feminist friends of mine probably look down at me for taking the Mr’s last name and allowing him to have such a huge say in naming his child. The Mr. will stop working and I’ll be the primary breadwinner for a while, which is non-traditional, but I’m not sure how many points this earns me in the feminist arena. Especially since I try to look good for the Mr., it makes me feel good.
Since I don’t think I’m much of a feminist, I thought it would be good to read a typical feminist blog and see where I really do differ, if I do at all. It’s good to broaden your horizons. I agree with MUCH of what she says, particularly about marketing to women that implies they have to be beautiful to be a woman and that the roots of this are to make themselves be more attractive to men. I mean, I like to look good for the Mr., but if you know me I certainly don’t go overboard, I just generally keep myself groomed and expect the same from him.
However, sometimes this whole thing goes overboard. She refers to herself and her readers as Blamers, and she really does tend to blame the patriarchy for everything. It seems to me that that would get tiring after a while (in my humble opinion). The one thing that really struck me, though was the quote:
“the basic unit of patriarchy, the nuclear family ”
So the premis is that we don’t want a patricarchy any more, where the man is in control of everything in human existence. I think we’re moving in the right direction these days. But the basic nuclear family is suspect here? I mean, if we are going to get rid of the patriarchy, do we have to get rid of the nuclear family? I love the Mr., and we wanted to make a child together, and he wants to be around to raise it til it’s an adult (and so do I, for that matter). And so if I’m going to be a feminist does that mean I can’t be part of a nuclear family? Is the alternative artificial insemination? Or do I have to deny that I love the Mr. and only use him for sperm donation? Does loving the Mr. create a basic patriarchal situation?
I guess I’m not a Blamer, and let the Blamers blame me for perpetuating the patriarchy by living with my husband and child.
