it’s raining here.

Kramer and I are on vacation this week, in and around Portland and then up to Seattle where her brother lives. We’re driving around, with no real plan besides having a nice time.

It’s raining here — it rains for a while, the sun comes out for a while, and then it rains again. Apparently Oregonians don’t carry umbrellas - it rains so much (but not hard) that they just walk around in these big anoraks so that when it starts raining unexpectedly they are always prepared.  It reminds me of the rainy season in El Salvador, when after the 15th straight day of rain I woke up and said, “It’s f**ing raining again.”  One would probably think those things after living here a lot.

Yesterday we drove around the Yamhill county wine country (I think it’s also called the Willamette wine area. We stopped at a Trappist monastery and hiked around their grounds, and at the end of the hike we saw a woman who was actually on retreat there. She looked a little wide-eyed at us when we said we had been walking around without checking in at the front desk.

Oh, and I bought a camera. Here’s us:

We are at a winery outside of Portland called Kramer’s. We had to go, you know, it’s called Kramer. And the way Kramer’s such a talker, these Kramers are now our best friends in the whole world, and Kramer has a case of Kramer wine arriving at her home in about a week’s time.

And so far only one person has asked if Kramer is my mother.
