smartest person in the room

Some time ago now, long ago enough for it to be safe to write about, I was training someone. I have been doing my job for seven years and am well suited to it. As part of the training, the person accompanied me on an analysis meeting, his first one, and I was leading the meeting. The person I was training interrupted me in front of customers, and restated my points — as if I wasn’t capable of explaining a technical point to someone - and did not add any value at all.

I spoke to him about this afterwards, and asked if he would please not restate my points. I said I know my business and didn’t need him to be correcting me, especially on his first meeting. He said he was sorry, but he probably would have a hard time not correcting me in situations like that, because, well, he’s used to being the smartest person in the room. Apparently that conversation we were having was included in that. I was a little taken aback, but said, well, he should learn, blah blah, we talked a little more, and he REPEATED the fact he was sorry, I’d have to just understand why he is like he is, he’s just usually the smartest person in the room.

I don’t work with him any more.  He’s off being the smartest person in the room elsewhere now.
