fiber, glorious fiber

Some friends at work have become obsessed with fiber.  Apparently you need more than 35 grams of fiber per day (according to various recommended daily allowances).   This is hard to do unless you work at it.  I’m now working at it and it is one of my repetitive topics of conversation, and even bought this large-ish book of complete food content tables - protein, carbs, fiber, etc.   There is absolutely no fiber in any animal product, although venison rates a lot better than other meats in terms of fat, etc, I note with joy.  Amazingly, the avocado has tons of fiber, and so does the chickpea (two of my favorite foods).   Today I made a salad of quinoa, chickpea, tomato, and parsley — fiber bonanza!  I’ve also become one of those people who scour the cereal aisle at the health food store looking for the best fiber content and something that looks like it doesn’t taste like sawdust.

These friends of mine and I get together once a week for dinner and a movie, and last week one of them made a supreme-high fiber dinner — everything calculated to give us the best fiber and protein combinations.  Three of us thought it was spectacular (our eyes mentally calculating how much fiber was in each ingredient), but the fourth said she spent the next week on the toilet paying for such a meal (we’re trying to convert her to the fiber side …)
