a little imagination
One more little thing about my autistic nephew. Well, really it’s more about Ian’s dad Dirk (my friend Kara’s husband). Apparently Ian, at one, was “feeding” his stuffed teddy bears food. Dirk thought something must be wrong with Ian, for him to be imagining that these stuffed animals are like people. Kara told me this, and of course I related the story of Brian and Dawn being concerned that Brett didn’t have any imagination at all. It’s apparently a common trait in autistic kids, looking at things in black and white and not imagining anything that is outside of the things they can see. So, for example, they won’t take a cardboard box from the dishwasher and pretend it’s a play house, because, well, it’s not a house, it’s a box. Brian and Dawn said, well, at least he’s not going to lie about anything - he doesn’t have the imagination for it.
So one day when Brett was seven or so, he did something wrong, and his mom asked him about it, and Brett … Brett lied. Through his teeth and not very well either, but he thought something up that wasn’t the truth. Dawn says she of course had to say, “Now, of course you’re lying Brett …” but deep down they were both glad he finally showed a little imagination. Apparently he’s getting pretty good at imagination — careful what you wish for!
