patting the flowers

I still go and hang out with my friend Kara on Friday nights, while her husband is working.  Ever since they started dating, years and years ago, I always knew that she was available to hang out with me because her husband has a business that make it imperative that he stay late on Fridays.  I personally can count on the fingers of two hands the number of times he has not worked on Friday night (their wedding and the birth of Ian accounting for about five of them).   So anyway, the Friday night tradition continues, but now we have much more fun watching Ian smile at us.

So there we were, hanging out in the back yard, and Ian was wandering around outside like he loves to do.  He loves it so much that we had to go inside for a little bit and he cried and sat by the door until we went out again.  His mom is an avid gardener, so he often gets to wander around while she is working on her plants or weeding or something.  While she does this, she gives him a plastic trowel to play with, and he carries it around (just like her).  We watched while he (he’s a year and some months, mind you) poked his trowel on the ground a number of times, and walked around just patting all of the flowers and plants - not harming them in any way, just patting them as if they were nice dogs or something.   Apparently this is what he thinks his mother does, and so he does it too.
