bike to work week

It was bike to work week last week.  I biked to work twice, which is no mean feat because since last summer, we moved our offices to the burbs.   Now, instead of biking along the lakefront, I bike near the expressway, under other expressways, over rivers on busy streets, and on sidewalks when the streets are too crowded with cars.

The first day was Tuesday, and I thought I would try to utilize the forest preserves out that way as much as possible.   However, the more I used the forest preserve trail the worse the surrounding streets were, and I wound up taking an hour and a half to get to work (having to backtrack twice).  On the way home, I took only surface streets and made it home in an hour.

The second day was Friday, which was also the official Chicago Bike to Work Day.  There and back only took an hour (I’m getting this down now).  But those suburbanites don’t take well to people biking on their streets.  One guy, on the way home, shouted out to me as he passed, “Are you nuts?”  and of course I couldn’t say anything but was thinking that it was him who was nuts driving on those crowded streets out there.

At one point during my commute I bike right alongside one of the busy freeways.  And I was going faster than all of the cars going in my direction.  It was great.
