settling into corporate

I work in the suburbs, in an office building, with a staff larger than I have ever worked with before.   I’ve been there since the middle of February, so here’s an update.

Transport: I dislike driving my car to work. It has been 15 years since I regularly drove my car to work (walked in Platteville, took the train in Chicago, walked in Zimbabwe, and took the bus in San Salvador).  Since we moved out here, I’ve only been driving to work, and I am getting so stressed about it.  I had to leave early in order to miss traffic, and either leave before 5 or after 6:30 to miss the evening traffic.  That means I was at work for a very long time.  Two weeks ago, I was to go downtown for our regular season tickets to the theatre, and didn’t want to deal with my car in the loop so I took the bus/train/bus to work.  It wasn’t bad, just an hour and ten minutes or so, but I got to read, and it is so much calmer than driving.  I actually show up at work with a smile on my face. I’m now taking it about four days a week and only drive when I have something to do afterwards. It’s a heck of a lot cheaper, too.

Brady Bunch: We are coming together more, but slowly.  I am still friendly with the guy I met when I was in Jerusalem (peter, of jan and peter), but it’s not like we continued being fast friends and tight coworkers when we returned.  We hadn’t worked together prior to the trip, and still don’t work together much now.  I’m trying to make friends throughout the organization and get people to work together, but years and years of process are hard to change in a month or two.

Rules: I work in the movie “Office Space”. I’m trying to change that, and winning small victories here and there.  I won’t relate them in detail since I really shouldn’t write about work, but suffice it to say that I can now tape a calendar to my internal office window.  Woo hoo.
