preparing for pesach

It’s been a busy week here in Jerusalem, preparing for Passover.   On Tuesday, the company had a pre-Passover celebration (in my mind, kind of like the holiday lunch party in the US during Christmas).   The head of the company told a joke:

A Jewish CEO was hired by a company in Utah. The company were all Mormon, and after a while they said to the CEO that he was a great CEO but they really wanted him to become a Mormon.  The CEO talked it over with his wife, and said he’d really rather not.  But eventually they pressured him enough, and the job was good enough, that he and his wife decided to convert to Mormonism.  After a few weeks of this, the CEO had second thoughts and told the management that he decided he wanted to stay Jewish.  He came home and told his wife, who said, “WHAT!  It’s a week before Passover!”

I might not have gotten this joke except that I am here in Israel the week before Passover, and it is definitely a lot of work.  In order to keep kosher for Passover, you have to remove yeast and yeast products from the kitchen, and clean it.  This process takes days, since apparently even after you remove the yeast, you have to give the yeast dust time to settle and then clean again.  Or something like this.   The hotel had two kitchens going in order to clean one and let the guests have breakfast in the other.  Then, they asked that we not bring any food into the hotel after Wednesday so that they could maintain the kosherness of the hotel.  Since Tuesday, we have only had unleavened bread for breakfast - and potato things, of course, but certainly nothing with yeast.

I always thought Passover was the spring celebration, but it’s apparently a lot of work to start celebrating appropriately.
