my taxi ride home

I worked a little late tonight, and then walked over to the mall to get a book on learning Hebrew.  It’s a pretty nice book - nice and easy for beginners like me.  Lots of practice with this new script, easy words and sentences.  I figured it would give me something to do, I seem to come here so often, and then if I ever get stuck with a taxi driver who can’t speak English again, I’ll be able to make conversation without having to resort to drawing little pictures.  It was fun, but not fruitful.

Then I went out to get a taxi, in the normal place in front of the mall. The first taxi guy in line was talking to his buddy, so I went to the second guy in line, and asked through the window if he could take me to my certain hotel.  He nodded, so I got in.

He looked familiar, so I asked him if he spoke English.

It was my non-English speaking taxi driver from the last trip of the blog entry!  The very same one!

We both laughed, and then I took my brand-new Hebrew-English book out of the bag and showed him.  We laughed harder.

He started to help me with some words, by looking in the book.  Name - Shem.  Good - Tov [I knew that one already].  I counted for him to ten, to show that I knew a few things, and he started to teach me 11, 12, 13, 20, 25, etc.    I recited how I learned Here and There.  This and That.  Left and Right.   All the way home.

I liked him so much that I wanted to keep in touch, but then I realized how futile that would be - would we count to each other by email?
