the education of kramer
Apparently I talk about my blog a lot. At least that’s what my tell-it-like-it-is friend Kramer says. It’s nice to have her around, none of this pussyfooting around. “Oh, you and your blog,” she used to say. She couldn’t even pronounce the name - it came out Hermione, Hermano, and then she’s revert to the english translation “what the f***”. She liked that part of the story. I used to ask her if she checked it, to which she replied, “Of course I don’t check it - I *talk* to you!”
Kramer got a new job at the beginning of the year, as Dean of Continuing Ed at a local city college. She is _so_excited_ about her new job. She’s rearranging things here and there, finding out about the neighborhood, about the students, about the faculty, adding new classes, dropping in on classes, and writing about the whole thing.
But she only had this one little beginning-of-the-semester publication to put her writing in, and one night while we were out drinking, I said (again), “You know, you could start a blog. Put all of this great continuing ed stuff in that.” She *loved* this idea. She kicked it around for a few weeks, and finally said, “Ok, come over on Tuesday, and we’ll make one up. You’re going to have to teach me how to update and all that.” She calls herself a luddite, and she’s pretty close to the truth.
So, over I went last Tuesday, and we got her set up on Blogspot.
We picked a theme. She was thrilled that it was green. And I mean Thrilled.
We added a new post, and viewed it on a web page. Thrilled again.
We added some links to the side of the page, linking to her community college, and to her department, and she clapped her hands to her cheeks, completely amazed that she had this ability to change this page.
She started telling me about another piece of writing she had done for something else, and I said she could copy and paste it into an entry. I thought she wouldn’t be able to contain herself, she was so excited.
We checked to see if people could search for her blog on Google. [It’s not quite there yet, but coming I’m sure.]
At the end of it, she thanked me and said, “Now … do you think I’m going to make little notes in my calendar about things to blog about, like you do?” I told her that I hoped she did continue to be that excited about it.
She’s posting quite often — have a look at http://trumanisms.blogspot.com. Tell her I said hi!
