what newt believes
One of my dear friends got me the “This I believe” series of CDs for Christmas. I listened to many of the essays over the weekend on our drive up to Wisconsin. The essays were on the most part thought-provoking, and almost everyone spoke in a positive manner — even (and especially) those whose beliefs arose from some great hardship. Even when stating something one does not believe in, the essays were positive. Penn Gillette had a great one (which I now see is first on the list of most-viewed essays) about the fact that he believes there is no God. “I have everything I need. It just seems rude to beg the invisible for more.” After hearing it, I believe that he likes living, he likes people, he likes the world the way it is.
Other people generally had positive things to say also - freedom is contagious, politicians are doing their jobs well, knowing other people is what really matters, etc. Thought provoking, each one, and positive at the same time.
Newt Gingrich on the other hand, starts out with “I believe the world is inherently a very dangerous place….” When I heard those words I recoiled inside. It is not even important that I don’t want him driving any political decision regarding my life, what is more important is that I feel sorry for someone who can only see the world for what is wrong with it.
UPDATE: I’ve been thinking about my dismissal of Newt’s opinion. Everyone deserves an opinion, and I’m sure Newt thinks he is doing the right thing by fighting all of the evil there is in the world. So, what Newt believes is really none of my business, and at the very least his beliefs made me think about my own.

Aren’t you magnanimous. Glad to get the update on that, I was wondering how that would turn out. Did you change your mind on this before or after you sent out the certified letter to Newt’s [civilian] office informing him of the revocation of his opinion?
I hope you got to the mailbox in time. I heard they took away his birthday a few months ago. It’s got to be rough.
