the recurring new year’s resolution

books_to_read3.jpg

Every year I include the same New Year’s resolution on my list, which is to not buy any more books until I have finished all of the books on my not-read-yet shelf (above).  I have been doing this every year for about six years, and I can usually make it til about June when there are four or five books left - at that point I either just leave them on the shelf or move them aside and admit I made a poor decision when I bought them.  The not-yet-read shelf is just next to my bed, and just above the “books I like to re-read” shelf.

And so, this week, I had to make sure I got my last book purchases in before the calendar turned.   The customers I worked with so much this year, librarians that they are, got me a gift certificate for Amazon.com.  For the record, the books I bought were a few about about Constantine and the early church, one about Thomas Jefferson, and Randy’s recommendation of “Omnivore’s Dilemma: a Natural History of Four Meals”.

It’s going to be a long spring.
