librarians who aren’t really

I don’t know where I get off thinking that everyone has to fit into my preconcieved notion of what they should be …. next topic on this list is a particular librarian.

My sister-in-law works at the school that her children attend.  She said that there is a librarian’s aide position open, and the librarian asked Jody why she didn’t apply.  Jody told me (but not the librarian) that the librarian is not what one would expect in an elementary school librarian.  She yells at the kids all of the time, she publicly humiliates them when a book is overdue, she doesn’t talk the books up to get kids interested, blah blah blah.  One would hope that youth librarians would be focused on making the library a great place to be and encourage kids to read - and this one seems to be falling short.  As a result, my niece and nephew don’t like to visit this library. Luckily, they read a lot anyway - Savannah devours anything in her path and Spencer still sticks to the Captain Underpants-type books.  But this was not at the urging of their librarian, alas.

Reminds me a little of Laura Bush, librarian.  I think we librarians were so optimistic about what Laura could accomplish as first lady, and (in my opinion) it’s fallen a little short.
