not waving but drowning
I have been trying to have a policy of not writing specifically about other people, either at my job here or in the PCV group, unless it fits into a story. However, I have been thinking about this woman a bit lately, and it’s more about the poem than her. One of the women in our group has been medically separated, and nobody knows why. With PC gossip the way it is, someone probably knows why but doesn’t want it to get around to the group, because once it is out, it is out like wildfire. This woman was lots of fun, and liked to party. A lot. She was in the capital a lot once she got to her site, and constantly rebelled against the strictures of training. We all thought she was a bit wild but would be a great PC Volunteer. I’ve heard a few rumblings about circumstances surrounding her departure, and it makes me think of the poem “Not waving but drowning” by Stevie Smith. Not that anything horrible happened close to death, she just went home, but sometimes people who look like they are having a great time are actually flailing.
